Estuary met for the first time this month in Saint Francis Hall — chairs in a circle, supper on the table, and whatever happened to be on everyone’s mind that evening. The conversation wandered somewhere between artificial intelligence, church history, and the question of how to stand in front of a changing world.
After introductions, the circle goes around once and people name whatever has been on their minds lately — a book, a podcast, something in the news, something chewed on for a week with nobody to chew on it with — and anyone may pass. The circle then goes around a second time, each person naming the one topic worth an evening, and whatever draws the most interest starts the night.
Real conversations have become scarce, oftentimes people are performing for an audience or hunting for a fight; Estuary is different — we listen first, and say something true when the turn comes.
Estuary is a conversation among equals. Anyone is welcome — believers, unbelievers, the still-deciding, and those who settled the question years ago. Everyone comes to listen, learn, love, and respect the others. Aristotle called the habit friendliness and put it between flattery and quarrelsomeness — which is where a good conversation lives. Nobody is under pressure to leave believing anything in particular. Assent cannot be compelled, and attempting it is bad manners.

Estuary meets at 6:00 PM on the second Wednesday of each month in Saint Francis Hall, food and drink provided. The next meeting falls on Wednesday, September 9.
